“Little House On The Prairie” (an absolute childhood favorite of mine) is a western drama series, an adaptation of the best-selling series of books of the same name by Laura Ingalls Wilder, that originally aired 09/11/1974 to 05/10/1982. Television producer Ed Friendly became aware of the story in the early 1970s & tapped Michael Landon to direct the pilot movie, a role Landon accepted on the condition he play Charles Ingalls. Over the course of the series, Landon directed 90 of the 204 episodes, with William F Claxton handling 68, Victor French helming 18, Maury Dexter directing 21 & Leo Penn spearheading 3. While interior shots were filmed in the Los Angeles CA Paramount studios, exteriors were recorded at nearby Big Sky Ranch, where Walnut Grove MN was reconstructed. This caused a bi of a discrepancy: MN doesn’t have the mountains that the CA landscape there does. The series tackled some tough issues: adoption, alcoholism, faith, poverty, blindness, prejudice, racism, drug addition, leukemia, child abuse & rape. Some episodes were recycled Bonanza plots. Post-series, 3 TV movies were aired: 1983’s “Little House On The Prairie: A Look Back To Yesterday”, 1984’s “Little House: The Last Farewell” & 1984’s “Little House: Bless All The Dear Children”. While “The Last Farewell” was the last to be filmed, it was aired before “Bless All The Dear Children” because of that episode’s Christmas theme. However, “The Last Farewell” was written to fulfill an agreement with the property owners that the acreage would be put back to its original state after the series ended. Since the cost of removing the buildings was extensive, the idea was hatched to blow-up the buildings, & that became part of the storyline of “The Last Farewell”. For the 1st 2 seasons, the series aired on Wednesdays to minimum ratings; a move to Monday in 1976 launched the series to the Top 30 for the remainder of its run. The cast includes Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson, Lindsay & Sidney Greenbush, Matthew Laborteaux, Richard Bull, Katherine MacGregor, Alison Arngrim, Jonathan Gilbert, Victor French, Bonnie Bartlett, Kevin Hagen, Dabbs Greer, Charlotte Stewart, Karl Swenson, Radames Pera, Brian Part, Kyle Richards, Merlin Olsen, Hersha Parady, Patrick Laborteaux, Linwood Boomer, Ketty Lester, Wendi & Brenda Turnbaugh, Dean Butler, Lucy Lee Flippin, Allison Balson, Jason Bateman, Missy Francis & Shannen Doherty. The series also showcased many guest stars, including Anne Archer, Jonathan Banks, Peter Billingsley, Ernest Borgnine, Todd Bridges, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Michael Conrad, Louis Gossett Jr, Mariette Hartley, Burl Ives, Vera Miles, Richard Mulligan, Patricia Neal, James Olson, Sean Penn, Kim Richards & James B Sikking.
