Have you seen this movie!?
What catches your spying-eye radar!?
I saw this movie earlier this year with a close friend & actually enjoyed it. ‘Cocoon’ is a science-fiction fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Ron Howard with screenplay written by Tom Benedek, from David Saperstein’s story. Filmed in St Petersburg FL mid-late 1984, the movie debuted in theaters 06/21/1985 &, with positive critical reception, became a box office hit, the 6th highest-grossing film of the year & won the Best Visual Effects Academy Award. Specific filming locations include the St Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, Sonny Shores Rest Home, The Coliseum & Snell Arcade buildings. In an intriguing twist, Robert Zemeckis was originally hired as director, but was fired after a year in development because the project financier (20th Century Fox) felt Zemeckis was not good for box office sales due to his films ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’ & ‘Used Cars’ [previously featured in the 10/29/2015 “Thursday Theatre” via THIS LINK HERE] being commercial failures despite critical acclaim. 20th Century Fox felt Zemeckis’ then-current movie would also be a flop, but ‘Romancing The Stone’ proved otherwise, handing Zemeckis momentum to do another highly-loved movie: ‘Back To The Future’. The ‘Cocoon’ cast included: Don Ameche, Wilford Brimley, Hume Cronyn, Brian Dennehy, Jack Gilford, Steve Guttenberg, Maureen Stapleton, Jessica Tandy, Gwen Verdon, Herta Ware, Tahnee Welch, Barret Oliver, Linda Harrison, Tyrone Power Jr, Clint Howard, Charles Lampkin, Jorge Gil, Rance Howard, James Ritz & Jim Fitzpatrick.
