“I Dream Of Jeannie” is a fantasy situation comedy produced by Screen Gems; it originally aired 09/18/1965 to 05/26/1970, featuring 5 seasons & 139 episodes. Created by Sidney Sheldon in response to the success of ABC’s “Bewitched” (featured in last week’s “TV Tuesday”, seen via THIS LINK HERE), Sheldon’s inspiration also came from the movie ‘The Brass Bottle’ (starring Tony Randall, Barbara Eden & Burl Ives). While the series was set in & around Cape Kennedy FL (despite NASA astronauts living in Houston TX at the time), with Nelson living at 1020 Palm Drive in Cocoa Beach FL, California locations were used for filming, including the main building at Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards Air Force Base, north of Los Angeles CA. Jeannie’s famous bottle wasn’t created for the show; instead, it was a modified special Christmas 1964 Jim Bean liquor decanter (containing “Beam’s Choice” bourbon whiskey), designed by Roy Kramer for the Wheaton Bottle Company. ~12 bottles were used during the show’s run. The series featured 3 sets of multi-part story arcs that featured viewer contests: a 2nd season 2-(4-)part episode for Jeannie’s birth date; a 3rd season 4-part episode for a combo to open a safe; & a 4th season 2-part episode for a secret location. When it came to casting, Sheldon insisted the lead role could not be blonde, to avoid an additional similarity with “Bewitched”. However, many unsuccessful auditions later, Sheldon relented & called Barbara Eden’s agent. The rest of the cast includes Larry Hagman, Bill Daily & Hayden Rorke, with recurring characters portrayed by Philip Ober, Karen Sharpe, Florence Sundstrom, Lurene Tuttle, Barton MacLane, Emmaline Henry, Abraham Sofaer & Vinton Hayworth, with additional dual-roles performed by Eden (Jeannie’s evil twin sister & Jeanne’s mother). 2 reunion movies featured different actors as Jeannie’s master: Wayne Rogers in 1985’s “I Dream Of Jeannie … 15 Years Later” & Ken Kercheval (Hagman’s “Dallas” co-star) in 1991’s “I Still Dream Of Jeannie”.
