Do you remember this series!?

“America’s Most Wanted” is a concept, based on several prior shows: a German series, “Crimewatch” (a 1984 British show), & CBS’ “Wanted” (1955-56).  After the pilot aired, the search was on for a permanent host.  Among candidates considered: former Marine Corps Commandant General PX Kelly & victims’ advocate Theresa Saldana.  However, John Walsh was selected, thanks in part to the publicity he had after his 6-year-old son, Adam, was kidnapped & murdered in 1981.  “AMW” premiered 02/07/1988 on 7 FOX stations; within 4 days of the broadcast, FBI 10 Most Wanted Fugitive David James Roberts was finally captured as a direct result of the episode.  Despite it’s popularity & cases profiling searches for murderers, rapists, kidnappers, robbers & other criminals, FOX canceled it, with the last episode on that network airing 06/18/2011.  Within months, tho, the series was resurrected for 1 year on Lifetime.  The show had 2 announcers: Don LaFontaine (original, until his 09/01/2008 death) & Wes Johnson.  While the show is considered to be a continually running series, it was briefly canceled for almost 2 months in the fall of 1996, per a decision that prior spring due to high production costs.  When it returned, the “AMW/COPS” Saturday night combination became the longest unchanged primetime schedule & a Saturday staple for FOX.
