âNashvilleâ (unlike the TV series previously featured via THIS LINK HEREÂ & THIS LINK HERE) is a satirical musical comedy-drama, debuting in theaters 06/11/1975. Written by Joan Tewkesbury, critics consider it a mosaic, with over an hour of musical numbers & multiple story lines (over a 5-day period, including a political campaign), complete with 24 main characters. While it opened to strong, positive reviews & won numerous awards (& is still considered a great movie), it received a backlash of criticism for pessimism, cynicism & sexism, while being despised by the mainstream country music community. Still, the movie is considered director Robert Altmanâs masterpiece & was selected to be preserved in the Film Registry in 1992. The motion picture was filmed on location in Nashville July-September 1974, including a local closed hospital (with 1 floor refurbished specifically for filming) & Altmanâs log cabin-style house in Nashvilleâs outskirts. Real country music singers of the time are said to be inspiration for some of the filmâs characters, including Roy Acuff, Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Kris Kristofferson & Lynn Anderson. The filmâs 2 award wins were both for Best Original Song (Academy & Golden Globes) for âIâm Easyâ, which ironically, charted in 1976, but not on any country charts; it reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 & claimed #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. ~28 songs were featured in the movie, but only 12 landed on the soundtrack album. The ensemble, all-star cast includes: David Arkin, Barbara Baxley, Ned Beatty, Karen Black, Ronee Blakley, Timothy Brown, Keith Carradine, Geraldine Chaplin, Robert DoQui, Shelley Duvall, Allen Garfield, Henry Gibson, Scott Glenn, Jeff Goldblum, Barbara Harris, David Hayward, Michael Murphy, Allen F Nicholls, Dave Peel, Christina Raines, Bert Remsen, Lily Tomlin, Gwen Welles, Keenan Wynn, Thomas Hal Phillips, Richard Baskin, Merle Kilgore, Elliott Gould, Julie Christie, Vassar Clements & Howard K Smith.
