‘Vanishing Point’ is a 1971 action road movie directed by Richard C Sarafian. Notable for its scenic film locations in the United States southwest (Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California) & social commentary, this motion picture debuted in theaters 03/13/1971 to not-so-positive reviews, but has since become a “cult classic”. Based on 2 actual events (disgraced career of a San Diego police officer & the high-speed pursuit of a man who refused to stop & was killed when he crashed into a police roadblock), the Super Soul character was modeled after rock’n’roll singer The Big Bopper. The idea of using a new 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T as the “star car” was because Chrysler had been providing 20th Century Fox with rental cars for $1 a day. Stunt Coordinator Carey Loftin requested the Challenger because of the “quality of the torsion bar suspension”, its “horsepower” & it being “a real sturdy, good running car.” Chrysler lent 5 alpine white models for the movie production, all of which were returned to Chrysler. The cast includes Barry Newman, Cleavon Little, Dean Jagger, Victoria Medlin, Karl Swenson, Lee Weaver, John Amos, Tom Reese, Paul Koslo, Robert Donner, Owen Bush, Bill Drake, Severn Darden, Delaney Bramlett, Bonnie Bramlett, Bekka Bramlett, Rita Coolidge, Patricia Holloway, David Gates, Anthony James, Arthur Malet, Timothy Scott, Gilda Texter & Charlotte Rampling.
