Say “Buick Skylark” to someone & you are liable to receive varying descriptions & memories … for good reason. The popular nameplate was made over 46 years in dramatically different production runs: 1953-4, 1961-3, 1964-7, 1968-72, 1975-9, 1980-5, 1985-91 & 1992-8. Created in 1953 to mark Buick’s 50th anniversary, the model was also designed as a top-of-the-line, limited-production specialty convertible to promote GM’s design leadership.

8 years later, the nameplate returned on a compact car, a luxury trim level of the Buick Special. By 1964, Skylark became its own line available in 2-door convertible, 2-door hardtop, 2-door coupe, 4-door hardtop & 4-door sedan variants. By 1968, the Skylark reached mid-size status, which also meant (per GM’s policy) using 2 different length wheelbases. After a brief hiatus, the nameplate returned once again as a compact, this time as the 2-door version of the 4-door Buick Apollo (which had debuted in 1973); the Nova & Oldsmobile Omega were also X-body vehicles.

In 1980, the X-body platform got a major redesign, which also marked a switch to front-wheel drive. While the Oldsmobile kept the Omega moniker, the Nova nameplate was dropped in favor of Citation. In 1985, with yet another redesign (including a switch to the N-body structure), the coupe version of the Skylark was replaced by the Somerset Regal. 1 last major redesign occurred in 1992.
