(inspired by my 09/2009 Route 66 road trip)

CHAPTER 77: A CARDINAL SIN

The brothers maneuvered through Edwardsville & Collinsville (with the world’s largest ketchup bottle) & stopped at the Chain Of Rocks bridge on the Illinois side:

They had a little extra time & decided to call their sister, but she didn’t answer her phone. This didn’t bother the brothers at all, partly because they knew they wouldn’t be able to chat long anyway & they figured she was busy with visitors. So, they left the bridge & headed for Ted Drewes, figuring they’d try calling again sometime while they were there, after the youngest’s WSM live broadcast. They arrived at the famous ice cream place just before 1p local time, under bright sunshine & warm, 70-degree weather.

“This is going to be great weather for my broadcast,” the youngest observed out loud while he & his older sibling exited the tan 1976 Caprice sedan.

“Indeed,” the eldest agreed. “Couldn’t have asked for better, I don’t think! What time are you going to go on the air?”

“Kyle has it scheduled to start around 1:30p & lasting an hour.”

“Right, OK. Well, let’s get set up, then we can call home after your show. Even if we stay here a little longer than planned, I’d rather call in the afternoon than wait until tonight. Might have a better chance at talking to others, too.”

“Sounds good to me,” the youngest acknowledged.

While the youngest brother unloaded the car, the eldest bought a Concrete treat for each of them, which they ate while setting up for the youngest’s broadcast. At 1:30p, the youngest started his broadcast with these words: “If you have not been to Ted Drewes in St Louis Missouri ever in your life, you owe it to yourself to find a way to get here. I promise you, whatever the distance you travel, it will be worth it. I just finished eating a “Cardinal sin” Concrete my brother bought me … think he had a Hawaiian Concrete … & I gotta tell you, it was … DE … licious. Might have to get another Concrete flavor after the broadcast before we leave for the Meramec Caverns! Now, before I go further, indulge me a personal message: sis, if you’re listening … & you’d better be! … we tried to call you earlier & will call you again after the show is over before we leave here. OK, now back to our regularly scheduled program…. I’ll tell you more details about our travels today & what we’ve seen … including a huge ketchup bottle & an old bridge … in a few minutes. But, now, I’m broadcasting LIVE from Ted Drewes in St Louis on WSM, AM 650, Nashville TN. Our 1st song for this broadcast is….”
