Route 66-based story (by OC,SH’s founder, inspired by his 09/2009 Route 66 road trip)
CHAPTER 70: OF THOUGHTS & PLANNING
“When I asked Kyle if I could do broadcasts from Route 66, I had no real idea how much I would enjoy them,” the youngest said thoughtfully into the microphone. “Then, when he approved them & helped with the prep work to be able to actually do them, I wondered just what I’d done. I started second-guessing if anyone would even care. Now, with your calls, texts, comments, shares, likes … y’all have shown me this, perhaps, is the best idea & decision I’ve ever had. &, for that, I’m grateful. My brother & I have only been on Route 66 a few days, but we’ve met so many great people, with, I know, a whole bunch more awesome folks to meet yet along the way, & I look forward to sharing our experiences with you as much as possible.”
The youngest sighed deeply, & then finished his thought: “That noted, it’s time for me to close out this broadcast, this time from the Springfield Illinois Route 66 Hotel & Conference Center. Until next time, take care & we’ll see you along the road. Willie, take it away….”
Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again” starts playing, & the youngest took his headphones off. He looked at his older brother & said: “Oh my.”
“You OK?” the eldest asked.
“Yeah,” replied the youngest. “Just … this is so cool.”
The eldest nodded, & the 2 brothers start to pack up the equipment. The brothers worked in silence, then the youngest, while they finished the equipment packing, posed this to his older sibling: “OK, so, how far did you want to go yet today?”
“I’m not sure,” the eldest said. “The St Louis area might be a good goal, but I doubt we’ll get out of here before noon, & we probably ought to grab a bite to eat before we head on down the road. I know, technically, Litchfield isn’t that far south of here, but there are a couple different pathways between here & there, & we could give those a good drive through before settling in Litchfield tonight.”
“That sounds fine to me,” the youngest said. “I know we’re getting a bit later start than we wanted originally.”
“Yeah, but I’m not worried about that,” the eldest replied. “While I was hoping for St Louis, I knew that was a long shot, given all that is between here & there. I’d much rather delay arriving in St Louis & see as much as we can while we can.”
“Same here,” the youngest replied. “So … get the equipment out to the Caprice, go grab our luggage, checkout & then stop at Cozy Dog on the way out of town?”
“Yeah,” the eldest nodded. “Sounds good to me!”
