#1 “Candy Man” | Roy Orbison
This song, which peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100, was released in 1961 as the B-Side to “Crying”, which notched at #2 on the same chart. Orbison found his best success during the rock’n’roll era (1957-1964). At the height of his popularity, 22 of his songs placed on the Billboard Top 40 chart, with 6 of those peaking in the Top 5, including a pair of chart toppers. Orbison was born in Texas & started the path to his career in a rock ability band in high school. Other favorite Orbison tunes: “Only The Lonely”, “Running Scared”, “Dream Baby”, “Oh, Pretty Woman” & “You Got It”.
#2 “Candy Man” | Sammy Davis Jr
10 years later, this song originally appeared in the 1971 film ‘Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory’; Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley wrote it specifically for the film, in which it was sung by Aubrey Woods. However, Davis Jr’s version of this song is the best-known & is considered his signature tune. Released April 1972 from the album ‘Sammy Davis Jr Now’, this single claimed #1 for 3 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 (starting 06/10/1972) & #1 for 2 weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart. Davis Jr’s version features vocals by the Mike Curb Congregation, which had released their own version of the song earlier.
