“The George Burns & Gracie Allen Show” half-hour series broadcast originally on CBS 10/12/1950-09/15/1958. Burns & Allen were vaudeville headliners in the 1920s & radio stars in the 1930s & 1940s, so success in TV was immediate & inevitable. The 1st 6 episodes (broadcast live every other Thursday at 8p US eastern) were done at New York’s Mansfield Theatre, with the stage set as the Burns’ living room. Beginning with the 7th episode, production switched to the CBS Columbia Square Hollywood facilities. From then on, episodes were filmed without a live audience at General Services Studios, allowing for syndication. Sets were designed to look like the couple’s real-life residence on Maple Drive in Beverly Hills CA, which also served as the exterior shots. While it has been extensively remodeled since Burns lived there until his 1996 death, the house remains, including the above-garage study. March 1953, the show joined “I Love Lucy” as part of CBS Monday night prime time, giving both shows an even bigger boost in the Nielsen ratings.
