#1 “Devil Went Down To Georgia” | Charlie Daniels Band
Who DOESN’T know this song!? Debuting 06/30/1979, this hit spent 14 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1; it crossed over & spent 2 weeks at its peak position of #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. A childhood favorite of mine (partly because I always pictured it in my mind), this song won the Country Vocal Group Grammy & the CMA Single Of The Year awards. The band’s founder is a Wilmington NC native, singer, songwriter &, of course, fiddler. His band, which appeared in the movie ‘Urban Cowboy’ & released 33 other tunes between August 1973 & February 2011, had no other chart toppers & only 4 other Top 15s: 1980’s “In America” (#13), 1986’s “Drinkin’ My Baby Goodbye” (#8), 1988’s “Boogie Woogie Fiddle Country Blues” (#10) & 1989-90’s “Simple Man” (#12).

#2 “Has Anybody Seen Amy” | John & Audrey Wiggins
On the completely opposite end of the spectrum is this song. While it wasn’t popular, it somehow struck a chord with me, & I can still distinctly remember hearing it in the car as I drove the country roads around my college town (N Manchester IN) in 1995 & 1996. The single hit the airwaves 08/13/1994, spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #22, becoming this brother-sister duo’s only Top 25. From Waynesville NC, the pair only released 3 other songs.
