‘Car Wash’ was released 10/22/1976 to mediocre reviews & was not a major success; however, since, it has developed a “cult film” following. Directed by Michael Schultz (from a Joel Schumacher screenplay), this movie was filmed at a Westlake, Los Angeles, CA car wash (corner of Rampart Boulevard & 6th Street). The cast includes Franklyn Ajaye, Bill Duke, George Carlin, Irwin Corey, Ivan Dixon, Antonio Fargas, Jack Kehoe, Clarence Muse, Lorraine Gray, The Pointer Sisters, Richard Pryor & Garrett Morris. Danny DeVito & Brooke Adams also appear in the movie; however, nearly all of their speaking rolls were deleted from the theatrical version but were restored for the edited TV version, which debuted on “Monday Night At The Movies” in 1978.

  1. Yes, I’ve seen it. It has it’s funny moments, and is definitely a mid-70s ‘time capsule’.
In the screen shot, the newest auto is the Firebird, which is definitely a ’76 due to it’s rear bumper shape, different from the ’74/’75.
