“My Mother The Car” aired for just 1 season (30 episodes), 09/14/1965 to 04/05/1966. Despite its fantasy nature, a variation of at-the-time shows “My Favorite Martian”, “The Flying Nun”, “I Dream Of Jeannie” & “Mister Ed”, ’TV Guide’ proclaimed it the 2nd worse TV series of all time, just behind “The Jerry Springer Show”. Ouch. This series’ co-creator, Allan Burns, created some of the best critically acclaimed shows in history: “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, “Rhoda” & “Lou Grant”. The premise of this series was simple: a man goes to buy a car but buys a dilapidated 1928 Porter because it is the reincarnation of his deceased mother! While real Porter cars existed, the car in the series wasn’t a production car. Both the “hero” car (built by Norm Grabowski) & “stunt” car (built by George Barris) were 1924 Ford T-tub hot rods equipped with Chevrolet engines…. Cast included Jerry Van Dyke (“The Dick Van Dyke Show”, “Coach”), Ann Sothern & Avery Schreiber.
